Counselling Done Differently: Outside in Nature

What is Nature Based Therapy?

Nature-based therapy is a holistic approach that emphasises reconnecting with the natural world through personalised, integrative therapeutic experiences.

The core philosophy centres on creating customised programs, where nature is the co-therapist, allowing individuals to engage in therapeutic practices that are specifically tailored to their emotional, psychological, and physical needs, ultimately promoting comprehensive mental health well-being and personal growth.

Taking counselling outdoors helps to cultivate mindfulness, develop a deeper appreciation for life, and address unique personal healing goals.

Nature-based therapy emphasises reconnecting with nature and experiencing its beauty, which can help to build a sense of belonging and meaning in life. This connection can be fostered using a variety of techniques such as nature walks, sitting in natural settings, and using nature reflection cards.

Reflection is a key component of nature-based therapy. People are encouraged to engage in mindfulness, walk and talk therapy, nature journaling and nature art in natural settings. This process can also involve tuning the senses in to the natural environment helping with self-awareness.

Nature-based therapy has been shown to improve mental well-being, lower anxiety, decrease depression and foster personal growth.
